A forum that celebrates traditional female culture in western China’s Gansu Province is being held in Beijing on August 1.
The “6th Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls’ Day and Women’s Development” is part of the efforts of Gansu Province’s Longnan City to protect and spread Qiqiao culture.
Qiqiao, which literally means praying to Qiaoniangniang, or the Chinese weaver goddess Zhinv, originated from thousand-year-old Chinese folk lore. Ancient Chinese women often prayed to Qiaoniangniang to be rewarded with outstanding skills, freedom, love, and happiness.
Sun Xuetao, Secretary of the CPC Longnan Municipal Committee, addressed the forum on Friday, stating that “This Forum not only implements the requirement of ‘reviving the cultural heritage’ from Secretary of CPC Central Committee Mr. Xi Jinping, but is also an important move to protect cultural heritage and constructing beautiful China. The Forum responses to the theme of Fourth World Conference on Women ‘Action for Equality, Development and Peace’ and serves as a practical action of Chinese government to strengthen the international cooperation and advance the comprehensive development of women’s cause.”
The Qiqiao festival in Longnan City starts on the evening of July 1 on the Chinese lunar calendar, and lasts for seven days and eight nights. Festival activities include worshipping Qiaoniangniang, poetry recitation, musical performances, dancing, handicrafts and fine arts exhibits, and so on.
During the forum on Friday, local female artists performed a series of Qiqiao ceremonies and presented displays of traditional Chinese calligraphy and paper-cutting, receiving warm applause from the forum participants.
The Qiqiao culture of Xihe county, Longnan city, is currently applying for World Cultural Heritage status.
