Police in east China's Jiangsu Province have detained two people after an explosion killed 65 people and injured over 100 others on Saturday morning, local authorities said.

The two senior executives at Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products Co., Ltd have been placed under police custody, sources with the Kunshan city government said.

The explosion ripped through a wheel hub polishing workshop owned by Kunshan Zhongrong Metal in Kunshan at 7:37 a.m..

Officials have said the explosion was a work safety accident, and the blast was probably caused by flames igniting dust inside the workshop.

Kunshan Zhongrong is a Taiwanese-invested company in Kunshan's economic and technological development zone, which is 70 kilometers away from Shanghai.

Its website said the company has 450 employees and listed General Motors as a client.
