A 19-year-old man from southwest China's Sichuan Province committed suicide on Sunday while broadcasting it on the Internet.
The young man, surnamed Zeng, posted over 90 threads from Nov. 29 to 30 on China's Sina Weibo, a microblogging site similar to Twitter, revealing his unstable state of mind and his wish to commit suicide.
Zeng began live broadcasting his suicide around 8 a.m. on Nov. 30. One of his threads read: "I have still decided to leave after some serious thinking. Don't try to talk me out of it. I hope there is not so much pain then."
According to his posts, he took sleeping pills and began burning charcoal inside his home around 9 a.m. He then posted a total of 38 threads in four hours, writing about losing consciousness and his depressed mentality.
The posts attracted thousands of forwards and comments, many of them trying to talk him out of the suicide. The incident was also reported by netizens to "Pinganluzhou," a Weibo account run by the local public security bureau.
According to a post by "Pinganluzhou" later Sunday, the local police began to search for the young man immediately after receiving netizens' reports. The police arrived at his home around 2 p.m. and found him unconscious due to the pills and carbon-monoxide poisoning. The man was rushed to the hospital but was later announced dead.
According to the West China Metropolis Daily, the young man was suffering from a break up with his girlfriend, whom he met online. The man's Weibo posts have now been deleted with the consent of his parents.
