China's Supreme People's Procuratorate has published a statement on their official website, stating that procuratorates across the country should set up an accountability system to prevent more wrongful convictions.

The statement specifically mentioned a 1996 case where a young man, Huugjilt, was wrongly executed for rape and murder.
According to the Mirror Evening News, Inner Mongolia's procuratorate authorities met with Huugjilt's parents on Jan. 22, briefing them on the latest development in their investigation into the staff members involved in handling the case.
The prosecutors had vowed that they will follow the laws and carry out the investigation into those involved regardless of their current positions, or whether they are retired or not.
On Jan 20, Huugjilt's parents submitted a report aiming to sue all staff involved in their son's case to the Procuratorate of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, calling to punish those who were responsible for the wrongful conviction.
Police officers handling the murder and rape case, prosecutors filing the charges against Huugjilt, and judges and court clerks of the first and second trials were all included in the parents' report.
On the same day, the procuratorate officially launched judicial investigation into the case.
Huugjilt, 18 at the time, was accused of raping and killing a young woman in a public toilet in 1996.
Courts sentenced him to death during the first trial and upheld the ruling in the second trial.
Huugjilt was executed two months later.
However, in 2005, another alleged serial rapist and murderer, Zhao Zhihong, confessed to the murder after being arrested.
In Dec. 15, 2014, Inner Mongolia's higher court decided Huugjilt was innocent after reviewing the case and apologized to his parents who have been seeking for the review for almost two decades.
On Dec. 17, former head of the task force investigating Huugjilt's case Feng Zhiming was arrested by prosecutors' authorities over the crime of taking advantage of their official power.
He was the first member of staff arrested after Huugjilt's innocence was declared.
Huugjilt's parents were also compensated with over 2 million yuan (some 320,000 U.S. dollars) by the government.
In Jan 5, 2015, the alleged serial killer Zhao Zhihong stood trial in Inner Mongolia for murder, rape, robbery and larceny, which also included the 1996 murder and rape case.
