Beijing's Xicheng District plans to use radar detectors to locate illegal underground construction projects, Beijing Times reports.
Last month, a public road caved in after an 18-meter-deep basement that was being illegally constructed in a courtyard house belonging to a former Xuzhou lawmaker in downtown Beijing, suddenly collapsed.
And a six-meter-deep basement has also been found in the district's Mao Jia Wan Hutong on February 5. The city's planning commission urged the house owner dismantle the illegal construction and refill the area in three days.
To avoid similar accidents, the Xicheng District has started tough investigations on approved rebuilding projects in private houses. Radar detectors will be introduced into the searching process of illegal underground constructions projects that pose a potential risk to public safety.
Song Jiale, deputy director of Xicheng District's Environment Construction Office, said radar detectors could help them to discover hidden underground basements even when private house owners try to block access to the entrances.
