Surveillance camera footage recently exposed a Western-looking man abusing two kittens, resulting in their death, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

The footage dated 9:03 p.m. on March 22 showed a Western-looking man sneaking toward a cat -- named Xiaoji by locals -- and her two kittens outside a tattoo shop on South Renmin Road. The man abused the two kittens for more than half an hour.

In the footage, the two kittens are seen being flung one by one across the camera's field of view, hitting a pillar outside the tattoo shop. The same scene was repeated three or four times. The cats' desperate cries alerted Liu Nuo, a convenience store assistant, who rushed to the scene, only to find that the two cats had suffered lacerations to their bellies, their hind legs and their tails, and both were dead. "It was extremely cruel," she said.

When the surveillance video was posted on the Internet, an anonymous tip claimed that the man was "Freddy," an Australian who used to teach in a local middle school.

After finding out that he had been exposed, the man called Liu in a bid to seek forgiveness and admitted he was the man in the video. "I was drinking away my troubles. I was having a bad time. I don't really know why I did that. Please forgive me, I would never do such a thing in the future," Liu recounted Freddy saying. Liu demanded that Freddy apologize in person, but he refused.

Freddy told the press he had been living in Chengdu since 2008 and once taught in local schools. "I deeply regret what I did that day. I plan to work as a volunteer at an animal welfare agency to compensate for the sin I committed. But I don't want to go back to the cat's place to meet those people," he said.
