"The certificate is useless," said Lin Biding, a doctor with the department of infectious diseases of the hospital in Wu's hometown. "The Ministry of Health had already issued documents that no institution could refuse to enroll or employ the hepatitis B virus carriers as far back as 2006 and again in 2007."

According to him, Wu was just a carrier, not a patient. "A carrier, like any normal person, does not need treatment. A carrier can be considered normal if the amount of virus drops below the set standard."

But without a hospital certificate, the university suggested Wu skip a semester and repeat her freshman year.

Wu refused and her mother signed a document indicating the girl's willingness to live alone in the dorm upon the school's requirement.

This stated that Wu voluntarily lived alone and would undertake all the physical and mental consequences caused by her status as a hepatitis B virus carrier.

Wu's mother said she was under the pressure from the school to sign this paper. But the university denied her allegation. The deputy secretary of school's party committee insisted the decision to live alone was made by Wu and her parents. He also did not think that Wu had suffered discrimination from her classmates. He said it was Wu who kept her classmates at a distance and changed the way of communication from direct talk to texting.

Another staff from the Tianjing Normal University verified the deputy secretary's words. The school had taken consideration of Wu's situation and her demand before making the decision. "Neither Wu's classmates nor the school suggested her to do that. It is Wu herself insisting living alone."

Wu's classmates found she had become sensitive and isolated herself since living alone. But they did not notice any aberrant behavior. Nor does the college counselor who received the call from Wu's mother. She said there could be many causes of the tragedy. It's too hard to explore the inner side of Wu's world. The deputy secretary consoled Wu's mother, saying if anyone had realized the situation earlier, action would have been taken to deal with it.
