Two of the bags were later recovered however one bag remains missing. The lost bag is estimated to contain around one million New Zealand Dollars (4 million yuan).
The incident occurred when the money was in transit from Hong Kong International airport to a freight station. The door of the trailer was not properly locked, allowing the bags of money to fall out as the trailer was driving around a corner.
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the third bag maybe picked up by a member of airport staff.
Police are currently examining CCTV footage of the area during the time of the incident.
A similar incident occurred last Christmas with some 15 million HK dollars thrown around Wan Chai during a bill escort conducted by G4S, a security company. People in the streets rushed to pick up the money with some even posting pictures of the money they had taken on the internet. Around 7 million HK dollars remained missing after the police's investigation. 3 people were arrested under the charge of theft.
