Top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng urged people from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan to remember their history of resistance against Japan's invasion in WWII.

Yu made the remarks on Monday while meeting with Lien Chan, former chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan's ruling party, and others from the island. They are here to attend the upcoming celebrations in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

"The great victory achieved by China in the war against Japanese aggression... was a significant contribution to the victory in World War II, and all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, made huge sacrifices for it," Yu said.

Yu hailed the cooperation between the Communist Party of China and the KMT as a key factor in the victory.

"Taiwan compatriots' anti-Japanese aggression efforts were an inseparable part of all Chinese people's resistance against Japan," Yu stressed.

Yu urged people from both sides to promote the spirit of "jointly keeping out foreign aggression and seeking unity" while advancing the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
