Lifting 70 million citizens out of poverty by 2020
Chinese President Xi Jinping said poverty alleviation will be a major part of China's post-2015 agenda. The central government pledged to help the remaining 70 million poor people shake off poverty and enjoy essential social services by 2020.
As the first developing country to meet the Millennium Development Goals target on reducing the domestic poverty rate by half, China's poverty relief efforts during the next five years will impress the world and help realize the global poverty reduction targets.
Over the past several decades, China has lifted 700 million rural residents out of poverty since the reform and opening-up policy was adopted in 1978, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
