Recent statistics released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs show that the divorce rate in southwest China's Sichuan province ranks first in the country for the sixth consecutive year.
241,964 couples in Sichuan registered to divorce in 2015, while 737,034 couples registered to get married, which means that for every three couples who get marriage certificates from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, there is one couple who get divorced.
Statistics also show that the divorce rate in Sichuan's capital Chengdu accounts for 21.8 percent of the provincial total.
Psychologist Li Xudong said to some degree, the increasing number of divorces reflects the advancement of society; it is the emancipation of personality in the modern age.
According to Li, women in Sichuan are more independent and have higher status. In addition, "Sichuanese," especially native Chengdu people, are well known in China for their leisurely lifestyles, and are perceived as having more opportunity to mingle with the opposite sex.
