A man surnamed Zhang was driving his electric motorbike on a street in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, on June 4 when he felt a sudden heat on his thighs. He found that his phone was burning in his pocket and had caused the heat. To save himself, Zhang had to rip his trousers off and toss the phone away, but he was still burned on his thigh and his hands.
According to the local newspaper, the phone was a Samsung SM-G9009W.
"If I had not reacted immediately, it could have been disastrous," the 26-year-old man said, feeling both embarrassed and frightened.
Zhang said he bought the phone for around 4,000 yuan (about US$610) at the end of 2014 in a local store. He claimed that he hadn't changed any parts of the phone. The phone sometimes got hot if it was used for too long but had not demonstrated any other anomalies, he said.
Zhang said he had been reached by Samsung staff who asked him to bring the phone in for examination.
