Direct economic losses amounted to 16.3 billion yuan (2.5 billion U.S. dollars), provincial authorities said in a statement on Sunday.

Heavy rainfall lashed Hebei from July 18 to 20, causing flash floods in mountains and serious waterlogging in some cities.

Four officials in the province were suspended from their posts for dereliction of duty in response to the deadly floods.

Hebei meteorological authorities warned of further hazards and levee break, and asked the public to remain on alert for potential floods.
