Title: No Success Without Cooperation at Eye Level

Abstract

The idea of a new Silk Road, which we are discussing today and tomorrow, is gigantic in every respect. There are myriad challenges to consider: distances, difficulties in construction, and political conditions in more than 60 countries.

While one can clearly see here in Beijing that the idea for the Silk Road was initiated by China, China could not realize this vision alone. President Xi Jinping has proclaimed it a "win-win situation" for all parties involved.

The following panel will deal with the question of the role of media cooperation and development in this major project. The obvious answer is that media cooperation should play a major role in this project, as visions live through their interpretations. To achieve the "win-win situation", President Xi Jinping hopes numerous partners take part in the initiative. Success for such a large-scale project also requires clever stakeholder management to reduce concerns on all sides directly and indirectly involved. The goal of respective media can depend on origin but vary greatly: In addition to Chinese and Western media, the media in the countries participating in the Silk Road project will play important roles in the success of the project by carefully observing different goals. Through close cooperation with various media, a mutual understanding can be promoted in respect to diverse cultures and experiences, eliminating possible incidences of mistrust.
