Beijing, Tianjin, Langfang and Baoding step up building ‘zero coal zone’

Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province are stepping up their effort in building “no coal zone”, according to the briefing on air-pollution prevention released by Ministry of Environmental Protection on May 15.
Beijing, Tianjin, together with Langfang and Baoding of Hebei, have carried out a series of policies to make sure that no more coal will be used as fuel. According to the “2017 Action Plan on Air-Pollution Prevention in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei” released in late March, the construction of coal prohibition zones in these four municipalities or cities will be completed by the end of October this year.
In Beijing, a total of 820 villages in seven districts will switch coal to clean energy, and ultimately realize the goal of “zero coal zone” by the end of this October.
Tianjin specifically included the Wuqing District in its coal-free zone. A series of pilot programs on managing household bulk coal are carried out in 1,293 households among three towns. It is estimated that Wuqing coal-free zone, once completed, will reduce 450,000 tons of coal.
Hebei Province is implementing the Action Plan on Air-pollution Prevention (2016-2017). Ten counties (cities, or districts) in Langfang and its development zone have formulated plans and launched the project of “substituting gas for coal”. The city of Baoding is renovating 590,000 households in 1,467 villages, which will see no coal used as fuel by the end of October this year.
