A Chinese national suspected of economic crimes has been repatriated from Canada, the first to be sent back from that country since the Fox Hunt campaign was first launched, reports Jiemian.com.

The suspect was handed over to local police in Shanghai on June 20, 2017.

Only identified by his surname Du, the suspect is accused of contract fraud worth 4 million yuan (588,400 US dollars) connected to an investment in a decorative materials company in 2012.

Du and his family moved to Canada that same year.

In April, 2014, Shanghai police issued an arrest warrant, and put in a request with legal authorities in Canada for assistance in returning the suspect back to China.

In announcing the return of Du, Shanghai police say foreign countries are no haven for suspects who hope to avoid punishment.
