Male, born in March 1944, ethnic Han, native of Siyang, Jiangsu Province.
Vice-chairman of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, member of its Leading Party Members' Group, Minister of Culture and member of its Leading Party Members' Group, President of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
Joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1966.
Studied at Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Nanjing University in 1963-1968 and graduated in 1968.
Worked at the May 7th Cadre School of Liuhe County, Jiangsu Province in 1968-1971.
Deputy head of the Armed Forces Department of Fanji commune of Liuhe County, Jiangsu Province, Deputy head of the office of Liuhe County revolutionary committee, Secretary of the Liuhe County committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC), Secretary of CPC Ma'an commune committee in 1971-1975.
