A wild spotted seal was released after being rescued by a fisherman in the Tumen River off the coast of Hunchun in northeast China's Jilin Province on Monday.

The young seal, weighing 50 kg, was about 1.2 meters long. It got caught in a fishing net in the Tumen River on Saturday.

Xu Chengfeng said that he found the seal in his net 15 kilometers away from the mouth of the river. "I have been fishing there for years, and I've never seen a seal," he said.

The spotted seal is also known as the larga or largha seal. It is a predator that lives along the coast in temperate waters. It is listed as a first-class protected species in China.
