Proposal for 'independent' investigation refuted
Adjust font size:

China on Thursday refuted proposals for so-called "international" or "independent" investigations on recent Lhasa riots, and urged probes into attacks on China's foreign missions last month.

Relevant organizations and countries should first probe who were behind the violent attacks on Chinese embassies and consulates following Lhasa riots instead of initiating such proposals, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu at a regular press briefing.

More than 10 Chinese embassies and consulates in Europe and the United States were harassed and attacked by violent mobsters after riots occurred in Lhasa and other ethnic Tibetan areas last month.

Jiang said many instances in the embassy attacks demand investigation by relevant countries, such as who were behind the scene, who were the mobsters, and what motives they harbored.

"If all these instances are clearly investigated, much more truth will come into light," Jiang said.

She suggested those proposers recheck their stances when similar cases like the Lhasa violence occurred in other countries.

"Illegal unrests and violent riots have also happened in some cities of Europe and the United States. How did those countries handle the cases? What were other countries' responses? And why have they taken a different attitude towards the Chinese government? " Jiang said.
