A Chinese political advisor on Thursday urged the enaction of laws to govern the country's film-making industry.

"The promulgation of such laws will enable film makers to shoot, produce and manufacture films on a legal basis rather than in accordance with short-term policies or a few people's favor," Yin Li, vice chairman of the China Film Association.

The censorship system is necessary for China's film industry, as it is in other countries. "What we need to talk about is what kind of censorship we need," he told a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Yin said China's film industry has made great achievements over the years, with the subjects and themes of movies being continuously broadened.

But he noted that the film industry is facing problems including a lack of coverage of serious topics or themes that are closely related with people's daily lives.

"China's society has gone through dramatic change, but there are few film masterpieces that record the modern China and its people," the advisor complained.

On the other hand, China's film-making is facing too much restriction in regards to sensitive topics such as public security, diplomacy, ethnic minorities or religion, Yin noted.

"I hope China can offer more freedom to film-making so that a more favorable environment will be created for the country's movie industry," he said.
