China's first aircraft carrier the "Liaoning", has docked for the first time at a military port in Qingdao along the country's east coast. The vessel conducted tests on its weapons system during its voyage from its former home port in Dalian. The docking is said to show that the aircraft carrier bay in Qingdao has logistic capacities to handle such ships. Wu Haojun has more.

China's first aircraft carrier finally docks where it rightfully belongs.

This navy port, the Liaoning's new abode, has been under construction for four years, and is well equipped with facilities to guarantee water, electric power, gas and oil, according to a military statement.

The docking also signifies Liaoning's operational readiness, something that the world will be watching for, especially in the midst of tensions with Japan over the Diaoyu Islands.

After its delivery to the People's Liberation Army Navy in September last year, the Liaoning has undergone a series of sailing and technological tests, including flights of the carrier-borne J-15 fighter.

But experts say growing military might will not change China's national defense policy which is defensive in nature or shake its commitment to peace and stability.

Dr. Fang Bing, associate prof. of PLA' s National Defense University, said:"I think China's defense policy will not change. It hasn't in the past 60 years and it won't in the future. As to what direction our naval strategy will take in the next step, I think continuous adjustments may be made as our national security environment changes. But not because of one single aircraft carrier."

Fang stressed that possessing as powerful a military vessel like an aircraft carrier does not equate to military aggressiveness. It can be used not only for offense and defense, but also for peace-keeping and rescue operations.
