China's top political advisory body, the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), concluded Tuesday morning in Beijing.
The session, opened on March 3, elected a new lineup of top political advisors, with Yu Zhengsheng, former secretary of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, as the chairman.
Some well-known names in China's cabinet, including central banker Zhou Xiaochuan, entered the leadership of the country's top political advisory body on Monday.
The new lineup features both veteran advisors and newcomers, high-profile officials of the State Council and experienced CPC chiefs or regional leaders, as well as senior officials from departments of the CPC Central Committee and leaders of democratic parties.
Here are the highlights of Yu's speech at the meeting:
• CPPCC vows to promote consultative democracy
The CPPCC's consultative democracy takes the Constitution, the CPPCC Charter and relevant policies as its foundation, and the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as its guarantee.
• CPPCC's new leader rejects Western political systems
"We need to steadfastly uphold the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), adhere to and improve the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC," said Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the 12th CPPCC National Committee, the country's top political advisory body.
