Greening: 25,000 hectares and 15.5 square meters

Beijing is making great efforts to control air pollution and create a more livable environment for local residents. In 2012, the city completed forestation of 25,000 hectares, doubling that of 2011, with 17,000 hectares implemented in plain areas. Urban green coverage hit 46.2 percent in 2012, up 0.6 percentage points over 2011, with per capita public green space coverage at 15.5 square meters.

It's expected that 40 percent of Beijing's land area will be covered by forests by the end of 2013, up by 1.4 percentage points compared to present day. In 2013, the city will complete forestation of 23,300 hectares and 6,666 hectares in its plain and mountainous areas respectively, while a total of 1,000 hectares of green land will be constructed in 2013 to make the city greener. Urban green coverage will hit 46.8 percent this year, with per capita public green space at 15.7 square meters. In 2013, 15 leisure parks will be built in the urban area and 100 hutongs will be renovated to become greener and more livable.

By 2015, urban green coverage will reach 48 percent, with the per capita public green space amounting to 16 square meters.
