Striker Fred scored twice as Fluminense secured its second Brazilian Serie A championship in three years on Sunday with a 3-2 victory over Palmeiras.

The former Lyon star struck just before halftime and a Mauricio Ramos own goal gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the Estadio Eduardo Jose Farah in Sao Paulo.

But the home side rallied with goals to Argentine international Hernan Barcos and Patrick Vieira before Fred netted a dramatic winner with a low first-time finish after Jean's cross from the right wing.

The victory lifts Fluminense to 76 points, 10 clear of second-placed Gremio with three matches remaining.

Fred, who has now scored 19 goals this campaign, said team harmony had been crucial to the Rio outfit's success.

"I have the pleasure of saying that this is the most united team I have been a part of," Fred said after the match. "It is a victory that we truly deserve due to the effort and commitment we have shown throughout the season."

Fluminense coach Abel Braga, whose contract expires at the end of the season, revealed after the match his intention to continue in the role next year.

"We have such a strong squad. There have been some minor hiccups but I spoke to Fred during the week and he said the players don't want the group to break up" Braga said. Endi
