A leading scientist has been arrested on charges of swindling a state scientific research fund. The unnamed professor at China Agricultural University, who's also a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, allegedly swindled state funds from his research project on the cultivation of new transgene biological species.

The arrest came after national audits found seven professors from five universities obtained research funds of more than 25 million yuan, equivalent to 4 million US dollars through false means. Two of them have been convicted and sentenced to prison. Another two professors and a doctoral student also have been arrested.

A special discipline inspection team has also found mismanagement of research funds and misuse of infrastructure funds at Fudan University, one of the top universities in the country. This came after the Ministry of Science and Technology launched a yearly internal inspection, with the aim of unearthing embezzlement of scientific research funds earlier this year.
