The death toll in Sunday's truck accident in southwest China's
Yunnan Province has risen to 13 and 55 others
were injured, the local government said on Monday.
A truck stuffed with 71 villagers overturned at 8:20 AM Sunday
in Kafang Town of Gejiu City in Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture
of Honghe, killing 11 people at the scene. Two others died later at
the hospital, the publicity department of Gejiu City said.
Five passengers were seriously injured and were under emergency
treatment at Gejiu Hospital and the No. 3 People's Hospital in
Honghe.
The villagers were on their way to a market in Kafang Town, some
15 kilometers from their home village of Baohe.
A traffic police officer said the truck "overturned while trying
to mount a pavement," but did not give details.
In another accident in Yunnan, six people died and five were
injured on Sunday in a collision between a heavy truck and a
three-wheeled vehicle carrying 10 passengers.
The accident occurred at 6:25 AM in Xipo Village, Chenggong
County, when the truck was heading to Kunming, the provincial
capital, said a spokesman from the Kunming public security
bureau.
Four people died at the scene and two others died later in the
hospital. Five people were still being treated, the spokesman
said.
Investigations into the accidents are underway.
