A 16-year-old female student committed suicide by slitting her wrists and jumping off the sixth floor at a high school in south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday, local police said.

The teenager, whose surnamed was given as Ma, plunged herself from the building at the Zhuhai Experimental High School at 6 p.m. in Zhuhai City. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but died at 8 p.m. despite medical treatment.

According to a suicide note found in her dorm, Ma, a student of Hui ethnic group who was in the first year in the senior high school, killed herself because of love affairs in recent days and undesirable exam performance, police said.

Ma's mother is en route to Zhuhai.
