Adjust font size:

Taiwan's health authorities Monday reported two more deaths from A/H1N1 influenza, bringing the island's toll to 14.

The two victims were a 8-year-old girl with cerebral palsy and a 23-year-old pregnant woman. Local health authorities said the pregnant woman's fetus was still alive but in critical condition.

Both deaths occurred Sunday in central Taiwan's Zhanghua County.

By Monday, 222 critical A/H1N1 influenza cases had been reported on the island, of which 61 were still in hospital.

As the autumn semester began, there was a surge in cases of patients with flu-related symptoms. Local media said there had been 17 cases reported in Taiwan on Sept. 12, the largest number so far in a single day.

Classes in 207 schools across the island have been suspended.
