The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has set up a key laboratory of computational biology in Shanghai, dubbed Uli Schwarz Laboratory, in memory of the late outstanding German biologist.

The CAS Bureau of International Cooperation said the advanced lab would provide an up-to-date research platform for global scientists in the field.

Prof. Uli Schwarz, former director of the developmental biology research institute of the Max Planck Society (MPS) in Germany, made extraordinary efforts to strengthen exchange and cooperation between the German and Chinese biological communities.

Prof. Schwarz, founding director of the CAS Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies, died of disease in 2006 in Germany.

The Chinese government awarded Prof. Schwarz the national sci-tech cooperation prize and the international friendship prize in 1997 and 2003 respectively.

Vice CAS President Li Jiayang and Herbert Jaeckle, vice president of the MPS, went to Shanghai for unveiling the computational biology lab.
