Zaozhuang tourism picks Li Yang as adviser

The tourism authority of Zaozhuang city, Shandong province, has hired Li Yang as an adviser due to his experience in language teaching.
Li, the creator of the "Crazy English" teaching method, was hired as a tourism development adviser by Zaozhuang city's Tourism and Services Industry Development Committee, even though he is involved in a domestic violence scandal.
The move stirred debate because Li was accused in August 2011 of beating his American wife in front of the couple's daughters. The couple is in the middle of divorce proceedings.
"We hope he can help us train more staff to have a good command of spoken English to better serve the growing number of foreign tourists heading to the city," said Dong Yejin, deputy director of the committee, on July 3.
