141 museums and memorial halls in Shandong province are open to the public free of charge.

There are over 1.5 million cultural relics featured in Shandong's museums.

Nearly 50,000 immobile cultural relics are registered in the province, among which over 60 percent are recent discoveries.

With a total investment of 900 million yuan (US$144 million), the project of protecting the province's Confucius and Mencius cultural heritage has received loans from the World Bank.

Shandong plans to have 300 such museums available by 2015, according to Xie Zhixiu, director of the provincial Bureau of Cultural Heritage.
