As survivors and relief workers in Dujiangyan paused for three minutes yesterday to pay their respects to the earthquake victims, survivors have begun to rebuild.

At 2:28pm on Monday afternoon, this troop of armed police joined with local survivors to observe three minutes silence to mourn earthquake victims.

Their truck sirens wailed in grief.

This troop leader thanked his team for their relief work over the past week. He asked his team to work harder to help the homeless overcome such a difficult period.

The troop has been stationed in Dujianyan since the earthquake. Its major task is to clear away rubble, provide basic medical aid, and ration food to the victims around the rural counties of Dujiangyan. So far, they have helped 12 villages.

Changhe village is one of them. There are 1300 permanent residents here. 10 were killed in the earthquake, and 150 were injured. The troop is doing their best to help them.

The villagers have made their own tents for shelter. They are cooking meals of vegetables, such as cucumber and eggplant grown in the farmland. They still need more rice, cooking oil and tents.

For many, the troop has not only brought them food and drinks, but also emotional stability.

It will be a long process for the homeless to rebuild their lives, but the government and the troops' relief work and the victims' own efforts are a good start towards reconstruction.
