Quake relief offers help require defense ministries' consultation
Adjust font size:

The offer by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to dispatch military airplanes to transport relief supplies to China to help in the earthquake relief requires further consultation between the defence ministries of the two countries, China's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking at a regular press conference here, Foreign Ministry spokesmanQin Gang told the media that the international community, including Japan, had given rapid assistance of all kinds to China since the severe earthquake hit southwest Sichuan Province on May 12. The Chinese side sincerely appreciated that. Chinese people also felt gratitude for the condolences and support given by the Japanese government and people.

Based on consultation, China agreed for some countries to carry relief materials via their respective air forces so the materials could reach the disaster-shaken areas as soon as possible. The militaries of some countries also provided China with urgent materials such as tents and blankets, Qin said.

He said China welcomed countries and their respective military forces to offer assistance to the quake relief efforts since the disaster was severe. However, any assistance and the way it was offered should consider the receiving country's situation and require bilateral consultation.
