Chinese mainland actresses Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li have captivated both domestic and international audiences and many young women idolize them and dream of stardom.

Riding the wave of popular star-making TV shows and enthusiasm for the upcoming World Expo, Dragon TV is launching a new TV contest for actress wannabes: "My Angel."

Organizers say they're looking for China's next female idol who embodies Oriental charm, wisdom and elegance - but they have to be good-looking and talented.

They will compete in acting and singing and will be judged on all-around abilities such as communications skills, team work and creativity. They will receive training in Chinese culture, art and etiquette.

National registration is underway and ends by the end of June.

The contest is open to all young women 18 and older.

Elimination rounds will be aired in July. Finals will be held in October.

Unlike other star-making contests "My Hero" and "My Show," "My Angel" encourages the young generation to be active and get involved - not to dream of overnight fame without real effort.

The show will collaborate with the organizing committee of World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Some programs explore aspects of the Expo theme, "Better City, Better Life." Contestants are expected to do some volunteer work for the Expo.

Winners will be judged by a panel of famed film makers, actors and veteran music producers. They include film director Feng Xiaogang, actress Zhou Xun, and composers Huang Shu-chun and Zhang Yadong.

According to organizers, the idea behind "My Angel" is to change the public perception of TV talent-making as superficial and senseless.

"We're trying to explore a new 'green' mode for this genre, which will convey a more active, heart-warming and inspiring message," says Tian Ming, director of Dragon TV.

"The show will provide a wide platform for any woman with real talent and dreams."

The winners will have chances to star in director Feng Xiaogang's future films, work as local TV hosts and make an album.
