The Chinese motor giant Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) that abandoned talks to save MG Rover from collapse is planning to build Rover cars in Shanghai.
SAIC paid 67 million pounds or over 126 million US dollars four months ago for the rights to the technology to build the Rover 75, the smaller Rover 25 and K-series engines.
Now it is preparing to use the expertise to make Rovers in its factories.
The Shanghai automaker will be able to resurrect the Rover badge in the East without having to tie up with MG Rover in Britain and sack thousands from the company's West Midlands workforce.
But before they could make these cars in Shanghai, they would have to get permission from BMW to use the Rover name.
BMW owns the rights to the Rover name and licenses it to MG Rover. The German company has said it would not reject a serious request to use the name.
