Heavy Quality Control in Meat Industry

A quality control system is being established to make sure that by 2010 more than 50 percent of meat products on the Chinese market will be slaughtered through standardized methods. 

Currently, only 25 percent of meat in China are slaughtered in industrialized packing houses, said Deng Fujiang, vice chairman of the China Meat Association.
   
Deng said China's meat industry has maintained a strong rate of growth since 1990s. In 2004, the combined meat output in China reached 72.448 million tons, about 28.1 percent of the world's total.
   
With China's output of meat and egg products ranking as the world's largest for many years, the per-capita output in the country is also close to the level of developed countries, Deng said.
   
To ensure greater competitiveness in the world arena, Deng said that the domestic meat industry still has a long way to go in livestock production, slaughtering and meat processing.
   
He also suggested domestic meat companies increase their cooperation to establish more conglomerates and sharpen their edges in technical innovation and the development of new products.
