Work on an industrial zone at the border area between Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and its neighboring city of Zhuhai is scheduled to start in the second half of this year, a senior official said Tuesday.
Speaking at a symposium held by the Macao Chamber of Commerce, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, secretary for economy and finance, vowed to speed up the implementation of the industrial zone plan.
Designing, planning and scrutinization and approval for the zone will be completed in the first half of 2003, the official said, adding that the special task forces from the two cities are further discussing development of the project and related technical problems.
As the first large cooperative project between Macao and Zhuhai, the industrial zone will absorb advantages of the two cities and benefit both sides, Tam said.
It is a "major breakthrough and fruit" in terms of economic cooperation between the two places, he added.
Macao and Zhuhai have agreed in general to establish an industrial zone at the area between them and many Macao enterprises have expressed wishes to move to the zone.
As a result, the SAR's unemployment rate, which has long perched at above 6 percent, is expected to come down after Macao residents find jobs there.
