A pupil is reading her new textbook in a primary school in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province on August 31 when the new autumn semester begins. All the students from primary and middle shcools have registered for the new semester in Nanjing. According to a document issued by local authorities, a total of 240,000 junior high school students and 320,000 primary school students have been receiving tuition-free compulsory education from the new semester of 2006 in thirteen districts and counties in Nanjing, with 140 million tuition fees waived annually.
