A law week with the theme of "Family Harmony" was launched in Hong Kong Saturday, which highlights the range of law protection and support services available to help to achieve harmony within the family unit.
Hong Kong Law Society President Michael Lintern-Smith urged the public to speak out and seek out "Family Harmony" during the Law Week 2004.
Saturday's Family Harmony event included a fun and interactive law-related games zone, while during the Free Legal Advice Sessions solicitors provided legal counsel on a range of legal issues not limited to family and criminal laws.
Melissa Pang, chairwoman of the Law Week 2004 Organizing Committee, said, "With divorce rates, domestic violence, drug abuse, elderly neglect and anti-social behavior increasing in Hong Kong, it is clear to see how the balance of Family Harmony can be disrupted, but is not always so obvious how to redress the situation."
She said, "The purpose of Law Week therefore is to inform people what their rights are and encourage them to speak to others-- lawyers, counselors, friends -- so that they are aware of what can be done to help alleviate the imbalance."
