Over 30 foreigner volunteers in Maizidian, Chaoyang District, began their guarding work in May this year. With red armband that reads "Security Guard" both in English and Chinese, they mainly patrol around in the area and cooperate with local security guards to guarantee the safety of all the residents.
John, who's been living in Beijing for six years, is passionate with the work, and thinks it's not only contributing towards building the city, but also makes it easier for him to get to know local people and fit into the Chinese society.
Besides doing the patrolling work, foreigner residents also hold activities every once in a while teaching locals English.
Li Zhongshui, an official from the Maizidian residential area, said local citizens are very happy to see the foreign guards helping them.
There are a number of embassies in Maizidian, and over 7,000 foreigners currently live in the area.
