A senior official in east China's Zhejiang province was sentenced to 13 years in jail after being convicted of taking bribes.
Su Jianguo, former head of the Publicity Department and a Standing Committee member of the Municipal Party Committee of Taizhou City, was also deprived of political rights for four years and had 488,000 RMB yuan (US$61,000) of illicit takings confiscated.
A court investigation confirmed that Su had taken 26 bribes from local business people and residents between the end of 1995 and June 2001 in return for using his power to help them get loans and promotion or to cover up illegal activities.
As Su had turned in all the bribe money, the court had showed leniency in its sentence, court sources said.
