Chinese contemporary artists who have studied and worked overseas present their latest painting, calligraphy and sculpture in "Thought of Return" at Shanghai Sculpture Park.
More than 100 works by 49 well-known artists are displayed at the large art park near Sheshan Hill in suburban Songjiang District. The event is organized by the Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association.
The exhibit is an insight into trends in the Shanghai art scene.
Works include Xia Baoyuan's painting "The Flower Vase" and "The Golden Snow Land" by Chen Xiejun, director of Shanghai Museum. Another is the oil painting "A Sleepless Night" by Chen Yiming, brother of the late celebrated artist Chen Yifei.
As one of the first Chinese mainland artists to succeed in the West, Chen combines ancient Chinese painting tradition with a mastery of Western perspective, composition and techniques.
"In past decades, Shanghai has fostered a culture of diversity, tolerance and openness to various cultures and art," says Chen. "This exhibition is a great platform for exchanging ideas among professionals."
Shanghai Sculpture Park, opened three years ago, had dozens of large sculptures created by Chinese and international artists.
