The United States and Britain seriously violated international law because they waged a war against Iraq without the approval of the United Nations, French President Jacques Chirac said Friday.
Chirac said Tuesday there was no justification for any attack at Iraq as it poses no immediate threat. "There is no justification for a unilateral decision to resort to force," he said in a statement.
France, one of the five permanent UN Security Council members, has been always staunchly against the Iraq war.
Chirac also insisted that the United Nations should be the only forum on rebuilding a post-war Iraq.
The United States has launched a military action to disarm Iraq, and buildings of the Iraqi leadership were attacked in the US air raids on the capital city of Baghdad at 05:30 local time (0230 GMT) Thursday morning.
