Thousands of South Koreans held rallies in Seoul Saturday to condemn the United States for waging the war against Iraq without the approval by the United Nations.
Several non-governmental organizations also attended the anti-war demonstrations held near the US embassy in central Seoul and a park in eastern Seoul.
The protesters, mostly are young people, held banners as "Stop the Shameful War", "No War" and "Don't attack Iraq"
"Unlike the younger people, I can understand my government's decision to send troops to the Gulf. I oppose the US-led war and worry about the situation in the Korean Peninsula," said Kim Yim-jin, a citizen in his 40s.
A South Korean film star blamed the US-led strike against Iraq, saying the US-led war against Iraq is "dirty aggression which aims to control oil and hegemony in the Middle East."
In a speech just few hours after the United State began the attack against Iraq on Thursday, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said that his government backs the US action, but expressed the hope the war will end soon.
