Germany Warns US of Unilateralism in Iraq Reconstruction
The German government Sunday warned the United States of taking further unilateral actions in the reconstruction of Iraq and appealed for a leading United Nations role.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said at a ZDF television interview that the rebuilding of Iraq should be conducted "under the leadership of the UN."

The UN has necessary legitimation and trust among the people to take the leading role, he noted.

He declined to say whether Germany would be sending peacekeeping troops to postwar Iraq as it did in postwar Afghanistan.

Defense Minister Peter Struck said the government has strong reservations over whether to participate the reconstruction of Iraq under US leadership.

"If the country is not to be rebuilt by the UN, I don't think Germany has responsibility to take part (in the reconstruction)," he told the "Frankfurter Rundschau" newspaper to be published Monday.
