The Japanese government reopened late Thursday its embassy in Baghdad shut down on March 20 due to the US-led war on Iraq, and a top Japanese diplomat will visit Baghdad this weekend, Kyodo News reported Friday.
Fumio Iwai, a councilor at the embassy, arrived in Baghdad Thursday evening from Amman.
The embassy will be initially staffed by two diplomats and more staff members will join as security improves. The embassy was looted after the fall of Baghdad, with most of the office equipment stripped by looters, Kyodo said.
In Tokyo, Foreign Ministry officials said Senior Vice Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will visit Baghdad this weekend to assess the need for Japanese assistance in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq, according to Kyodo.
Motegi plans to meet with Paul Bremer, the newly appointed US administrator of Iraq, and Jay Garner, head of the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance, Kyodo said.
