Police Campaign Helps SZ Safer

Nearly 16,000 Shenzhen policemen swept through the city's crime-infested areas, busting about 300 crimes and arresting more than 200 suspects in a two-day campaign that ended Tuesday evening, a Shenzhen police spokesman said Wednesday.

The mission was part of the "Eagle" campaign, a province-wide crackdown in November and December initiated by the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department.

The two-day campaign in Shenzhen was launched simultaneously in the city's six districts after the "Eagle" campaign started throughout Guangdong early this month.

Starting from 8 PM. Monday night, Shenzhen police searched more than 26,000 pubs, beauty saloons, rented apartments and garages.

The mission tracked down 18 crime rings and seized 662 suspicious vehicles, three guns and 28 grams of drugs. The police also smashed several gambling dens in Futian, Longgang and Luohu.

"The battle has achieved a fruitful result. It reinforced Shenzhen's public security and frightened criminals," said Li Feng, chief of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau.
