Palestine, Israel Urged to Continue Peace Talks

Chinese Mideast envoy Wang Shijie urged Tuesday Palestine and Israel to continue peace talks.

Wang told a news conference at the Chinese Embassy in Cairo that given the fragile nature of the Palestinian-Israeli truce, the two sides must intensify efforts and avoid taking any action that might hurt the current peace momentum.

He appreciated the Palestinian leadership for its efforts to revive the peace process and called on Israel to implement agreements reached with the Palestinians.

He said China supports the Palestinian people's legitimate right to establish an independent state, stressing the land-for-peace formula is feasible for the Middle East peace.

Wang started his visit to the Middle East region on March 30. His itinerary covered Palestine, Israel and Egypt.
