Mongolia's General Election Committee announced Monday that Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party's (MPRP) Nambaryn Enkhbayar was set to win the country's presidential election because the preliminary result showed that he has won more than 50 percent of votes, the minimum required to avoid a runoff. MPRP's monitors and foreign observers said the turnout was more than 70 percent in the Sunday's presidential election and the election process was held without major complaints and shortcomings.
Democratic Party's candidate Mendsaikhan Enkhsaikhan who is said to be Nambaryn Enkhbayar's main rival, has called him to concede defeat. The final result of the election will come out soon.
Nambaryn Enkhbayar, chairman of MPRP since June 1997, graduated from the literature institute in Moscow. He served as minister of culture from 1992-1996 and in 2000 he was elected prime minister. After the election of parliament in 2004, he became chairman of Mongolian parliament.
