The Chinese embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Saturday confirmed the death of a Chinese tourist who fell into the crater of an active volcano Friday.
Zheng Zhaoyin, 34, from China's Hong Kong, fell into the crater of Volcano Nyiragongo in eastern DRC on Friday afternoon, Yu Qiuzhong, an official of the embassy told Xinhua, noting the woman's passport number was HA 9105536.
A team of UN mission in DRC on Saturday located the body of Zheng, which was some 200 meters below the crater, said officials of the mission.
The team, also finding the trace of landslide at the place where Zheng was falling, planned to extract her body on Sunday,
Yu pledged full efforts to help the victim's family and the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in dealing with the accident's aftermath.
Nyiragongo, with an elevation of 3,469 meters, is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Africa. It last erupted in 2002.
